Directed By MML

All week, I’ve been watching some of my favorite movies (Basquiat, Vanilla Sky) to hype me up enough for this announce- ment: next year, I become a director. The New York Film Academy runs a bunch of international classes in different European countries, including a summertime course (in English) at the French state film school La Fémis. From June 28 to August 8, I’ll be enrolled in a six-week film and digital filmmaking course, the end result of which will be a 20-minute short film. I’ll keep training my eye with my Nikon till then, and gorging on my DVDs.

Writers – surprise – don’t make much money, folks. If writing is your talent then, trust me, you have no choice but to write. But since becoming a dad three years ago, I’ve been thinking more and more about how to (pretentious alert!) keep building my body of art while still putting in place the things I want for the fam. I was always gonna make movies, even if they were of The Brown Bunny indie variety, I was just never in a hurry. Directors usually don’t get good till they’ve lived a little anyway. Directing seemed like a career for my 40s, which aren’t forever away now. So, my next book, it’s probably my last book. And I won’t be 44 writing Young Jeezy reviews either.

Now, a list: 10 of my favorite films of all time. (Don’t hesitate to add yours.)

  1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
  2. A.I. Artificial Intelligence
  3. Requiem for a Dream
  4. Easy Rider
  5. Husbands and Wives
  6. Manhattan
  7. The Shining
  8. Magnolia
  9. Celebrity
  10. A Clockwork Orange
