'Joe's? Oh, Jaws!' — Cotillard Wins Oscar
filed under: academy awards, la môme, la vie en rose, marion cotillard, oscars
Though I’ve interviewed an Oscar nominee before (Will Smith), I could never say I’d broken bread with a winner… till Sunday night. I met Ms. Marion Cotillard at the Hôtel Costes late last year for a Mean magazine feature. I first saw La Môme (known as La Vie en Rose to America) at the Angelika Theater on a visit to New York City last summer, to take advantage of the English subtitles. The Édith Piaf biopic was a phenom, and Cotillard deserves her Academy Award; she won a César (France’s Oscar) the same weekend for the same role. In person, she’s unassumingly cute and coquettish. She even stuck me with the check (ha!), which was a first in my 15 years of talking to the famous. Click here to read “Belle on the Ball,” our conversation together. (She loves Spielberg’s Jaws; her French accent makes it sound like Joe’s…) Congratulations, Marion.

Miles,
I was really happy she won as well. I saw the film at the Angelika around the same time as you and then went out and saw it again the next day I was so blown away by her performance. If she didn’t win I felt like I would be boycotting the Oscar’s for some time afterwards. I don’t know anything about her personally, but her performance was truly amazing. I watched it again in the Fall on DVD with my friend actress/ screenwriter/filmmaker, Sandye Wilson and she had the same reaction. REWIND! And we watched again.
Loved the film, but Marion’s performance was really something extraordinary.
one love,
Brian
